When studying the normal scalp, fungal organisms can be easily confused if examined at low power. It is crucial to note that, even in mild cases of tinea, the inflammatory reaction tends to be reduced (compare with Figure 1). Establishing an appropriate differential is key for an accurate diagnosis of tinea capitis.
